Speaking of music, this brings us to our Should we or Shouldn't We topic for this week! FaBeauty's question to all Girls of God is: Do you think G.O.G.'s should listen to music that does not explicitly express faith, or the Jesus Christ in its lyrics?
There has been much debate about the music choices of our generation today. Some believe that with the obvious power that music contains, it is important that as G.O.G.'s we do not expose ourselves to the persuasion, feelings or inclinations that certain types of music can produce. On the opposite end, others feel that music is just an expression of life and a meaningless pastime that has little ability to negatively impact believers of God.
SO, HOW DO YOU FEEL?
Do you listen to all kinds of music, or only to specific genres or artists?

FIRST...I'm loving the site. It's obvious that you put thought and time into it....so KUDOS to you.
ReplyDeleteNow to get down to the issue...MUSIC. OF COURSE MUSIC is powerful and as GOG's we should guard our ears. Because like the LAW of GRAVITY..."WHAT goes IN....MuST come OUT". As a hip hop dancer I struggle with this a lot.
When we listen to music we internalize the feelings and mood that the music is portraying...KNOWINGLY or UNKNOWINGLY.
MUSIC is VERY powerful and "MEDIA is the DEVIL's MEDIUM"...so just be careful to what you bring in cuz sooner or later it's bound to come out......
I don't think there is anything wrong with listening to music that doesn't mention Jesus's name in it lyrics. I think music is powerful, but if used the right way, it can only build a person up. Some R&B songs, rock and hip hop songs though, i wouldn't even try to listen to because of their negative lyrics. I don't know...music is a personal decision, but sometimes people don't understand the consequences of those decisions.
ReplyDeleteGood Question. I love music and i really try to monitor what i listen to. Now, listening and hearing are two different things. For example when you are at a cafe or a store and they are playing secular music, it's hard for you not to hear it. And sometimes these songs get stuck in my head. I am currently fighting against Lady Gaga....her songs are LITERALLY played EVERYWHERE. I find myself rushing out of public places just to avoid listening to certain songs.
ReplyDeleteSo i would say that i do monitor what i purposely listen to. But i don't only listen to christian artists. I try to listen to neutral songs ( meaning no club/violent/suicidal/carnal music for me).
That's how i feel right now about music. Who knows, it might change as i prosper in my walk with God.
Jojo, thank you for your comment. I totally agree, Lady Gaga is everywhere and I do think that her stuff is toxic. I hope we will all get to a point one day where music can serve to build us up instead of confuse and tear us down. But, until that day, we are responsible for what we allow to shape our minds and hearts.
